The relative phase of first ( ω 1 ) and third harmonics 3 extreme ultraviolet light pulses was varied to control the population 2 s state in helium through interference + − two-photon excitation paths. monitored by observing total electron yield due autoionization decay. Maximum occurs when two matches difference complex atomic amplitudes governing calculated trend differences agrees well with measured data spectral region resonance, provided that time-reversed path is also taken into account. These results open way accessing ionization paths involving energetically distant intermediate states perform interferometry range monitoring final populations.
